Pilates for the Ages

blog photoThe Pilates Method, a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, works! It works for all body types, all ages. Whatever your range of movement currently is, Pilates can work for you.

Using the set, yet varied exercises within the system, Pilates works with the whole person. It brings to the body an “inquiring mind” and in turn that inquiring mind informs the body. That is, we don’t do the bicep curls…we feel the bicep curls. We don’t count our lunges with the goal-oriented motivation of making it to a certain number… we experience and feel ourselves doing the lunges. We focus on breath, we focus on balanced muscle usage…we bring our awareness to the whole body not just to the part that is so called, being worked out. This focusing on ourselves, whole body, at any given moment is what makes Pilates wonderful for everyone and particularly for us as we age.

As we age our bodies change, our goals change…no surprise there. What does seem to surprise many people I have met and worked with however is that they can still feel good and have a positive exercise experience. That they can still feel strong and come away with a renewed sense of vigor surprises them. Instead of focusing on that bum knee…we focus on the rest of the body. We are careful not to do more damage but as we work to strengthen what is available often times that bum knee which may have been causing discomfort due to habitual patterns of movement becomes a non-issue.

Proper motion is lotion…not just for the body but for the spirit as well. Joseph Pilates at times referred to his system as an “internal shower”. That is, when you pause to work out via his system, focusing mind and body, you will feel refreshed from the inside out. In the same way that a shower can take away the days grime, mindful movement can leave you feeling revitalized… as if you have released stale, maybe negative energy. Healthy movement increases circulation, lubricates the joints and makes us feel better. With motion our chemistry changes!

When we feel good moving we move more. Pilates helps everyone feel good moving what they can!

“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion”
